p>Facebook can give you a copy of the information in your own account: your photos, videos, posts, comments and messages. It is a good way to back up your memories before you delete your account, change accounts, or just want to be safe. This guide shows how to request the download, how to save a single video of your own, and how to keep the file private.
You can only download the data of your own account.
Which way is right for you?
- Everything in your account: request a full copy with Download your information.
- Only photos and videos: choose just those types in the same tool.
- One video that you posted: use the download option on that video.
What you can download
- Your posts, photos and videos.
- Your Stories and Reels.
- Your messages.
- Your comments, likes and reactions.
- Your friends list and groups.
- Your profile and account information.
Before you start
- Make sure you can log in and that the email on your account is one you can open.
- Use a device and network you trust. The file can contain private messages.
- Check your free storage. Videos can make the file very large.
How to request your data in the app
- Open Facebook and tap the menu (your profile picture or the three lines).
- Open Settings and privacy, then Settings.
- Open Accounts Center, then Your information and permissions.
- Tap Download your information, then Download or transfer information.
- Choose your Facebook account.
- Choose All available information, or Specific types of information to pick only what you need, such as photos and videos.
- Choose Download to device.
- Choose the date range, format and media quality, then tap Submit request.
How to request your data on a computer
Log in on facebook.com, open the menu with your profile picture, then Settings and privacy and Settings. Find Accounts Center and follow the same steps: Your information and permissions, then Download your information.
Format, quality and date range
- Format. HTML is easy to open and read. JSON is for programs and for moving data to another service.
- Media quality. Higher quality means a bigger file. Choose lower if the file is too large.
- Date range. Choose all time, or a shorter period for a smaller file.
How to download the file
- Wait for the notification or email from Facebook. A big account can take a while.
- Open the link. Facebook may ask for your password again.
- Download the file. A large account may arrive in several parts.
- Unzip it on your computer, or use a file manager on your phone.
Save one video of your own
If you only need one video, you do not have to download everything. Open the video that you posted, tap the three dots and look for Download or Save video. Videos you posted on your Page may also be available from the Page's tools. The options you see depend on the app version and the type of video.
Keep your data safe
- Do not share the download link.
- Keep the file in a private folder or a password-protected archive.
- On a shared computer, delete the file when you are done.
- Download soon, because the link may stop working after a few days.
If you do not get the file
- Check spam or promotions folders.
- Make sure you are reading the email account linked to Facebook.
- Wait longer for large accounts, then try the request again.
